Abstract:

Background: Despite the availability of a wide range of antibiotics, bacterial infections are among important challenges for the healthcare system. Therefore, the introduction of new antimicrobial preparations such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) could be suggested theoretically as a preventive measure for bacterial infections. We aimed to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of PRP against three common oral bacteria. Methods: In vitro antibacterial activity of PRP against Streptococcus Mitis, Streptococcus Mutans, and Neisseria Lactamica as three common oral/dental bacteria was determined by disc diffusion method. Baseline antibacterial activity was assessed by measuring the diameter zone of inhibition after 24 hours of incubation at 37 °C. Results: PRP had strong in vitro antibacterial activity against Streptococcus Mitis, Streptococcus Mutans and Neisseria Lactamica with the mean zone of inhibition diameters of 6.73±0.52, 5.8±0.43 and 6.67±0.43 mm, respectively. Conclusion: PRP is an effective antibacterial agent along with conventional antibiotic treatments against oral and periodontal infections.

Antimicrobial Effects of Platelet-rich Plasma against Selected Oral and Periodontal Pathogens.

Antimicrobial properties of platelet rich plasma (PRP) against various microorganisms have been recently pointed out. PRP could be an alternative to conventional antibiotics in preventing oral and periodontal infections. We examined whether PRP has in vitro antimicrobial properties against Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Prophyromonas gingivalis, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albican...

Antibacterial activity of Glycyrrhiza glabra against oral pathogens: an in vitro study

Objectives: Oral infections and dental caries are still considered as serious public health problems and inflict a costly burden to health care services around the world and especially in developing countries. Materials and Methods: In the present study, we evaluated the antibacterial activity of Glycyrrhiza glabra (G. glabra) against oral pathogens by diffusion methods and determined the minim...

Antifungal and antibacterial activities of polyherbal toothpaste against oral pathogens, in vitro

Background and Purpose: Herbal toothpastes are more secure and efficacious and less poisonous due to containing natural chemicals as compared with the synthetic toothpastes. The present study aimed to formulate a polyherbal toothpaste using accessible medicinal plants in Iran and evaluate its efficiency in the protection of oral hygiene and prevention of dental caries. Materials and Methods:...
